It doesn't get much better than Edinburgh. As the capital of Scotland and one of the country's most important cities, Edinburgh is home to a lot of great stuff - Not least of this is some fantastic nightlife, making it perfect for groups large and small. Read More
George Street has everything. It is one of the city's star shopping streets and, more importantly for party-goers, is at the very heart of Edinburgh's bustling nightlife. Packed with classy yet not-always-expensive bars, after the sun goes down the crowds of shoppers give way to throngs of people looking for a party. It is one of Edinburgh's most popular places to go for a night on the town, and with good reason. It is, quite simply, one of the best options and a firm favourite with many revellers whether they are visiting the city or thoroughly home-grown in Edinburgh.
One of the historic districts of Edinburgh's Old Town, the Grassmarket is overlooked by the centuries-old Edinburgh Castle. The district has certainly kept up with the changing times, and has gone from being a thriving market to a great place for a night out. The area has long been dominated by its pubs, which got a boost from a £5 million redevelopment of the area just a few years ago. Since the regeneration, the local council has been encouraging the business of the Grassmarket to thrive, and thrive they have. In many ways, the pubs and bars to be found there are now bigger and better than ever before.
The Haymarket is currently undergoing regeneration, and is already becoming one of Edinburgh's best-connected, most exciting, and most up-to-the-minute districts. It's home to great shops, plenty of dining options, and some absolutely brilliant pubs and bars. It's a great place for an Edinburgh visitor to hold their celebrations, and is just getting better as the development goes on. There's a mixture of well-established and more traditional establishments, and trendy new ones popping up as the area grows and as more space opens up for fresh venues.
Just a stone's throw from George Street is another great nightlife hotspot: Rose Street. Though a little less well-known, it is much like George Street; a major shopping street which is also known for its nightlife. There are pubs and bars aplenty on Rose Street – so many that it was once nicknamed the Amber Mile. It has a long history as a drinking spot, and as a result many of the pubs and bars there are of a more traditional kind, but there are also more modern establishments to be found there. Its proximity to George Street makes it easy for groups to move between the two, opening up a huge range of stops for a pub crawl.
